About Us

Our mission:  To find a permanent space on the Upper West Side to create and operate a not-for-profit neighborhood cinema devoted to quality independent and foreign films.

Just a few years ago, the Upper West Side had a rich cinematic landscape, with multiple independent cinemas throughout the area.  The closing of the Lincoln Plaza Cinema on Jan. 28, 2018, forced by the landlord, was a devastating blow to independent cinema there.

That day, more than 600 people packed a three-hour memorial to the theater and its owner, Dan Talbot.  Lincoln Plaza Cinema remained well attended, highly respected worldwide and financially viable to the end.  It is in the spirit of that cinema that devoted fans, film lovers and the cultural community at large have come together, volunteered their time and donated money to ensure that New Plaza Cinema continues to grow and thrive.
